In recent months UFC lightweight Brok Weaver (15-5-0) has suffered heavy criticism from many MMA fans and much of MMA media due to allegations of dog fighting. I spoke to Brok Weaver earlier in the week in an attempt to get the bottom of these allegations and to shed some light on the circumstances surrounding the video of his bloodied dog that he uploaded to social media just over a year ago.
Brok's yard has been fenced in for a long time and is home to 12 happy dogs. Brok would go onto talk about these animals and how he "and [his] wife rescue strays, found on the side of the road" or in other poverty ridden situations. These facts go directly against the narrative that Brok is an animal abuser or is not a good animal owner. Brok and his wife are responsible for saving the lives of many animals and should not be persecuted for a lapse in judgement.
During 2019, Brok and his wife took in his cousin's dog "and began taking care of it" for a brief stint. In this time, his "dogs got used to it and then they became friends with it" after adjusting to the new situation. His cousin's dog would "live out there for like a week, and they were all eating from same pot" by the time that the dog could go home.
A few months after Brok had returned the dog to it's home, it came to visit along with Brok's cousin. His cousin "let [his] dog loose while they were sitting there talking". "His dog went up to see [Brok's] dog", and he believed that they "weren't gonna fight" due to their prior interactions. Brok's "dog jumped on his [cousin's] dog and started playing with him and licking him too much" which caused his cousins dog to "take a piece outta the dog's ear".
After the initial altercation Brok's "dog turned on his dog and started crushing his dog and they started fighting pretty hard". Fortunately, Brok was able to "grab [his] dog and kicked him off".
After the fight was over and the dogs calmed down, Brok and his cousin were trying to make light of the situation and "were laughing over it". During a lapse in judgement, Brok took a video "bragging over his cousin" because his dog had won the fight and uploaded it to social media. The fight was not planned and Brok doesn't ever partake in dog fighting. The video would be posted to social media and was blown out of proportion by fans and media.
What's Next For Brok Weaver?
Brok Weaver fell short in his May 30 bout against Roosevelt Roberts after taking the bout on nine days notice. Brok's diet was not on point and he "hadn't been grappling for six weeks". Although he was "walking around at 186 pounds" Brok still wanted to fight and came in only two pounds over the limit at the weigh-in.
Although the result didn't go his way, Brok will use this as a learning experience and "will listen to his coaches and management team" going forward when it comes to short notice fighting.
Brok is spending his upcoming training camp in Coconut Creek, Florida training at American Top Team. He is looking to get into the octagon "two more times before the end of the year" and is eyeing a late August and December bout.
Brok Weaver will put these allegations behind him and will be looking to string two losses together to end off this roller coaster of a year.
